You are born without boundaries, an endless sky of pure, silent awareness. But society cannot manage the boundless; it needs a label, a name, a confined identity to control and predict. So, you are handed a mask, a fabricated center of gravity. This mask is the ego. It is not your reality; it is merely an accumulated idea, a shadow formed by the opinions, expectations, praises, and criticisms of others. We spend our entire lives furiously polishing this shadow, mistaking the reflection in the mirror for the original face itself.
When you feed this shadow, it inevitably swells into arrogance. The ego cannot survive in isolation; its very existence depends entirely on comparison. To feel large, it must make something else feel small. Arrogance is never a sign of genuine inner strength; it is the frantic, noisy defense mechanism of a terribly fragile illusion. The arrogant mind walks into a room and instantly divides the world into exhausting hierarchies: who is above me, and who is below me? It thrives on friction, claiming superiority in wealth, intellect, or even spiritual purity. Yet, this constant, desperate need to prove oneself requires immense, draining energy.
This continuous exhaustion naturally ferments into deep frustration. The ego is a bottomless begging bowl. It constantly craves validation, demanding that the universe bow to its self-importance. But the universe is vast, wild, and supremely indifferent to our fabricated masks. When life refuses to play by the ego’s rigid script—when failure strikes, when beauty fades, when the applause inevitably ceases—the arrogant mind collapses into misery. You become frustrated not because existence is fundamentally cruel, but because you are clinging to a dead, frozen image in a world that is a fluid, ever-changing river. You are demanding permanence in a reality of constant flow.
Ultimately, this fortress of frustration becomes your prison of alienation. The ego builds thick, invisible walls around your being to protect its fragile status. It constantly whispers, "I am separate. I am different. I am better." But love, joy, and deep human connection demand exactly the opposite—they require the total dissolving of boundaries. You cannot truly embrace another human being, nor the beauty of existence, while wearing heavy armor. Arrogance burns the bridge to the outside world, leaving you stranded on a desolate, cold island of your own making. You may be surrounded by a thousand people, yet you will remain profoundly, achingly lonely.
The way out is not to fight the ego, because fighting only gives reality to the shadow. The way out is simply to observe it with silent, relaxed awareness. When you look deeply into your arrogance and frustration, you will find nobody there. The house is entirely empty. Dropping the ego is not a loss of your true self; it is the ultimate liberation, the joyful realization that you were never the tiny, suffocating mask, but the boundless, dancing sky behind it.
