Country goes to dogs, who cares?

Dogs are everywhere on the Indian streets, a big problem, especially for small children, who gets mauled by dogs every now and then. But who cares? Who cares, if the whole country is getting into or being pushed into a state of gross mismanagement. Election time is quite dangerous for Indian system, when promises are made, also when these cannot be fulfilled or are even harmful to the country and system in the long run. And if one political party does not promise, then the other would do so. After all, we are in a democracy and votes matter, even if they come by harming the country and its economy, social fabric and development in long run.

One state in west India has done so recently, when it succumbed to demand of one community regarding reservations in jobs, overlooking the supreme court’s guidance over the issue, and granted reservations in government jobs and educational institutes to a vote heavy community. Well if you have promised in the elections, you have to implement it. And if you don’t do so, then the opposition parties would get the streets jammed, with marches, with protests, with threats and not the least make counter promises. Many promises are made in the elections, rarely few of these are fulfilled, however time and again different political parties have championed themselves in finally fulfilling, sooner or later, promise of granting reservation to a new community or cast in a particular state. Votes are ensured, at least temporarily, and so the degradation of our system especially in governance.

In the latest case of increasing reservations, the state in question would have now 68 percent reservation of government jobs and places in educational institutes. It means for normal unreserved Indians, who have been and are contributing maximum to the nation building and to country’s progress, there would be only 32 percent jobs in government sector available. In fact, less than that, as reserved category candidates can even compete for these 32 percent also. So for example, a normal Indian’s child with 98 percent marks would be denied entry into a medical institute and another one from reserved category with say 50 percent marks would get admission. That’s not the end, the same less qualified person would treat me in a hospital and may put my and other’s life in danger, because he became a doctor, not because he was capable but because of reservation. I too have right to live and get treated by a capable doctor and not by some incapable one. Same would go true to say so among others, for the bridges and buildings we use, trains we travel in and schools and colleges, where our children study.

And the one who missed admission with 98 percent marks may end up working on a clerical post in some private company, wasting his and country’s talent. Or if he takes an educational loan and gets his education from a ten times costlier private university, he would keep on repaying the loan for many years and still may not get a job in the government sector too. The candidate with 50 percent, who would have barely managed to complete his medical or engineer studies due to gross inefficiency, would beat him again for any government sector job, because even there 68 percent positions would be reserved. What a justice? But politicians would not bother and Indians would not understand.

They will not understand that 68 percent of government agencies would be or are being handled by these people, who were far less than the best, when they got government administrative or policy making jobs. And they would or are handling government policies and administration. Another reason, why many good government schemes are not implemented at the end level. Not that all those who joined government jobs without reservation are always too capable or very honest, but the comparative count of more capable people is on their side.

Now list of problems associated with reservation is countless and have been debated inmedia endless number of times, but rarely politicians could justify sensibly the continuation of reservation. And fact is, that reservation never helps any community, class or cast. Just reservation is no answer. If it did not help in upliftment of certain communities even after 70 years of reservation regime, how would it help them in future or the new ones demanding or getting reservation now. It only cripples the system, which gets contaminated by it. More than reservation are the requirements of proper education, social awareness and self-employment for the affected communities, which the country in any case lacks. And job opportunities are mistaken by limited secured jobs in government sector. People are less willing to self-employment or vocational jobs. Less educated and lesscapable people across the community and cast lines imagine or dream of the jobs seen in Bollywood film, where almost everyone with lesser education, capability and low income can have bigger houses, better working place and rich family life, which is rather too hard to come by, even for well-educated and hard-working people. Even in richest of the countries people struggle and really work hard for even simple life. Main difference being, more social awareness, more self-employment and no reservation in those countries.

More social awareness, more self-employment and no reservation was never an idea in our country. False promises and cheap popularity by politicians has been always the order of the day. While politicians gained the country lost, especially the poor and down trodden ones. Poor remained poor and the social status of many despite reservations did not change. It can not be changed like this. But it was a boon to politicians, who actually created the idea of reservation to ensure their votes, and not for social and economic upliftment of the socially or economically weaker people. Initially it was promised for 10 years by first government of India after independence, later it kept on extending it to ensure the votes of these communities, while practically not doing anything worthwhile for their economic or social upliftment. And deliberately nothing was done for actual betterment of these people, so that they can keep promising continuation of reservations and even offering it to the new communities and keep getting their votes.

Now it is being demanded on the religious lines also, which would be more dangerous and troubling for the social fabric of country, crippling it more administratively and economically. Next would be to extend or force it on private companies also, which would be catastrophic. Desire and misunderstanding regarding quick upliftment through reservations is not helping anyone, not the communities or sects demanding and getting it and not the country as a whole, as crucial jobs of safety, security, social health and maintenance and even government policy implementation are falling into less capable hands. It only helps the politicians. Country has to rethink, revolutionise and educate all concerned to get out of this evil as fast as possible. People have to play their role, and they must, if the country is to be kept on tracks of development and progress. Blogs, social media, social platforms, discussions, and movement like that of Anna Hazare on the matter is the need ofthe time. But, who cares?
