Disruptors ………now we have in plenty

Recently in a mega event organised by a leading self-proclaimed nationalist news channel, one moderator announced that we are the country of disruptors. I could not disagree with her, considering the recent election results and some negativity being created in the Indian socio-political environment, despite Indian politics and economics receiving all kudos from economists and politicians worldwide for the progress country has made in recent couple of years. Before I could have applauded her for her statement, she surprised me by introducing the positive disruptors we have in history and two very modern ones.
We disrupted the limitations of mathematics by introducing zero in mathematics. We disrupted the advances of Alexander the great. We disrupted the ambitions of British empire by compelling them to quit India, the jewel in the crown, about half a century back. And now when we have a flood of foreign investors in India, presumably affecting India’s economic autonomy, a couple of entrepreneurs disrupted this business of foreign control by their new successful ventures, with no public or government money or support, and took overseas concerns head on. One from the world of Yoga ventured with decent success in world of consumer products. And the other one, from a small family in Orissa, created a worldwide Hotel Chain, revolutionising the mid segment Hotel industry, paving way for decent budget Hotels for Indian and foreign travellers and also revitalising the mid segment hotels and their employees who were struggling to survive in cut throat business.
And this disruptor is a twenty-five-year-old person from a middle-class family in tribal areas of Orissa. And he created a new successful business, a start-up, when the real disruptors of economic progress in India, were blaming everything on demonetisation and GST introduction, the steps welcomed by economists and politicians worldwide, but became a cause of disruption for many in our country.
It showed its effect in recent elections, where in a central Indian state, a rather comparatively progress oriented government, which brought the state out of the category of beemaru or economically crippled state to that of a developing one, was disrupted by some ever hungry, impatient and less the logical voting population of the state. They forgot that, the one they are voting for, have few years back had crippled the state to economic disaster. Same can happen at the national level too. We are a demanding nation, demanding jobs, loan and tax waivers, easy life and good quality of life. But getting carried away by self-centred interests, we are happy to abuse and disrupt the government or people which take hard decisions for a corruption free developed country and are happy to bring back the one which have proven records of disrupting the progress of the country and creation of a corruption less system. While the whole world is praising the country’s economic and development progress, our own countrymen are blaming it for GST, demonetisation, lack of jobs and what not. Without any logical understanding of economics and about the overall progress which is happening, they are happy to believe, and rather firmly, the hearsays or mis campaigns, readily available and spread in social media and some misinformed journalists.
So, this will carry on. We in general, no more disrupt the abnormalities of system and society, but will jump in impatiently to disrupt anything progressive, if it doesn’t suit our direct interests. Country’s interests always take back seat. My job, my reservation, my subsidy, my business (better without tax compulsion or GST), tax reliefs, lower fuel prices are supreme, the country’s progress and stability is not my concern. Though not of all, that is the attitude of many, even of some well-educated persons. This needs to be disrupted.
But on the positive side there are people among us who are creative, like the two mentioned above, who don’t demand, but contribute, who are not self-centred, but think of society and country as a whole. Others need to change their thinking process and be positive and rise above ever-growing personal interests and likings, and think like a solider. A soldier doesn’t think about his life or his or his family’s interests or survival, when he stands guard for us. He thinks of the country and makes supreme sacrifice when needed, so that we can live safely. Why can’t and why shouldn’t others think like that and rather contribute whatever little they or we can towards country’s well-being, and not to fall prey to hearsays, feelings and demands which disrupt the hard development decisions and steps towards ultimate development of country and well being of all.
